Listening is the prelude for better communication. Sometimes we relent to a speaker in order to end a conversation but that may be the base of a problem. Firstly to be attentive is very essential. Knowing the language is important or it stays as a barrier to communication. While listening it is good to hear well and participate in positive body language. Meeting eyes, nodding and expressing interest are all encouraging to a speaker. You must wait for the person to complete so that there is no interruption perceived.

How to Phrase a Question
During casual conversation or a general chat, many times we find it difficult to continue a topic. To improve the conversation it is good to initiate a topic. Several topics are inter related and you can find a connection within them. Hence phrasing a question to get more knowledge about the same is vital. In case you just met a new neighbor in your lift, the topics can be casual and not personal. You can ask, ‘Which is a good grocery store here?’ or ‘Is there a vegetable vendor nearby?’ This helps you to break the ice and talk about a topic that is neutral and will surely make the person to converse.
Several times the question has to be phrased with a lot of tact. Certain words are important. If you are fresher in your summer training group you can enquire. ‘What will be my remuneration? rather than ‘What is my salary?’ This shows a lot of maturity and discipline in making an effort to phrase the question. Many times people are said to be rude as they ask many personal questions. It is good to ask a person his name and native but at the same time too many questions about their family will not be apt at the first initial meets.
Phrasing a question with a doctor has to be done well. Though you may have several worries about your health, it is good to word the questions in a chit and ask the same. For instance, you can ask. ‘How soon will I feel better with these pills?’ rather than ‘How long will it take?’ These simple points appear polite and this will be encouraging more open conversation. The doctor is a well wishes but bombarding him with questions will not be apt. Similarly when you are interrogated by an authority, counter questions are a sign of being defensive and this aggression will intensify the situation.
Enquiring about a new scheme or concept has to be done with a lot of pre meditation. All of us want our money to multiply and if there is a probability of increasing the same in a friendly scheme, research is necessary. Asking the right questions to the banker seems good if you want to know the suitability of the scheme. Often we are irritated with a false promise; here too it is good to put forth the questions directly. The receiver will judge the tone and a polite question, ‘How much time will it take’ can be replaced with ‘How soon will you deliver’ or in an aggressive tone it can appear like ‘When can I expect it? The latter suggests that a lot of waiting has been done and the receiver will surely initiate prompt action.
